The Felts Park permanent stage, being constructed by Branson Construction of Chilhowie, was slated to reach substantial completion on July 25, meaning that it will be ready in time for the 75th anniversary of the Galax Old Fiddlers' Convention the second week in August.
The exterior looks to be almost complete, showing a stone foundation with framed log siding and a green metal roof to give it a rustic appearance. Construction of the 20-by-28-foot permanent stage began in April, and the overall project, including all interior work, should also be complete by the end of September, said Keith Barker, Galax City Manager.
Although there is some minor exterior and some interior work to be done, Barker said the stage will be usable by the big event.
The cost of the construction of the stage is estimated at $240,000, and is being funded with a $100,000 grant from USDA Rural Development and matching funds from the City of Galax and the Galax Moose Lodge.
The interior will feature heating and air conditioning; dressing, sound and warm-up rooms and two restrooms.
The stage will be set nearly 100 feet back from the grandstands and will accommodate various events.
