Carroll County first responders were called to Fancy Gap Mountain on Tuesday afternoon after a multi-vehicle accident resulted in one fatality.
Virginia State Police confirmed that James Cody Lineberry, 22, of Hillsville, was killed in the accident, which involved a total of three vehicles.
The crash occurred at 2:40 p.m. on U.S. 52, less than a mile north of Virginia 688.
According to a news release, a 2000 Pontiac Sunfire driven by Lineberry was traveling north on 52 when it crossed the center line and struck a southbound 1999 Chevrolet Trailblazer head-on. A southbound 2003 Toyota sedan then rear-ended the Trailblazer.
Lineberry reportedly died at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to police.
The driver and passenger of the Trailblazer, both residents of North Carolina, suffered minor injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The driver of the Toyota was not injured in the crash.
Traffic was backed up on the mountain for close to an hour while emergency crews worked at the scene. Traffic cleared for both sides around 4 p.m.
Responders to the scene included state police, Carroll Fire & Rescue and Cana Rescue.
Trooper R.B. Phipps is investigating the cause of the accident.
