After 13 games, Galax and Carroll County American stood as the last remaining teams in the Dixie Boys District 1 Minors baseball tournament at Mountain View Park.
Galax survived a pair of extra-inning scrapes to reach the final pairing while Carroll American battled its way back through the bottom bracket after losing its second game of the event.
The two teams squared off Tuesday night, with Galax needing one win to wrap up the tournament championship. Carroll American was hoping to extend the tournament one extra day, needing to down Galax twice for the tourney title.
Carroll American 7, Alleghany 3: Carroll broke open a tight ballgame with a big fourth inning to open the eight-team tournament Friday morning.
Leading 3-2 entering the bottom of the fourth, American got runs from K.K. Underwood, Haden Quesenberry, Chandler Vass and Ryan Phillips to take a 7-2 lead. Alleghany tacked on a run in the fifth but would get no closer.
Wythe West 12, Wythe East 1: Josh Devine slugged the first of his three home runs in three days in the top of the first, boosting West to the easy win over their cross-county rivals. Bryson McCall scored three runs for West.
Carroll National 10, Floyd County 0: National erupted in the third inning and finished off Floyd in four innings Friday morning.
Leading 2-0 after two innings, Carroll pushed seven runs across in the third to pull away. Six straight National batters reached and scored after a leadoff out.
Ian Herman scored three times for Carroll National, which allowed just two Floyd County baserunners.
Galax 18, Grayson County 5: The host team led 2-0 after two innings but tacked on nine runs over its next two at-bats to roll to the opening-round win.
Cade Ashworth and Matt Lundy scored in both innings for Galax, which generated four runs in the third and five more in the fourth.
Grayson County got on the board when Chase Pope and Isaac Hawks scored in the fourth but it wasn’t enough to ignite a game-changing rally.
Lundy scored three runs for Galax, which saw seven different players cross home at least twice each.
Alleghany 11, Wythe East 5: The boys from across the state line avoided elimination by jumping to a 6-0 lead after two innings and ending East’s stay after two days to open the second day of play.
Donovan Davis scored three runs for Alleghany while Keaton Todd and Cole Murphy added two runs each.
Grayson County 18, Floyd County 2: Grayson survived to see another day, ousting Floyd in an easy win Saturday afternoon.
Tied 1-1 after two innings, Grayson County went nuts offensively over the next three innings with five, four and eight runs. Chase Pope and Gage Peoples scored in all three big innings for Grayson, which saw its first eight batters of the fifth score. Jacob Kelly also had three runs for Grayson.
Wythe West 10, Carroll American 8: West jumped on Carroll American early and held off a late rally to win its second game in as many days in an upper-bracket game Saturday afternoon.
Josh Devine cranked his second homer, a solo shot that helped West take a 9-4 lead after three innings.
Carroll American put together a four-run rally in the fifth but couldn’t carry the momentum into the final inning and dropped to the lower half of the bracket.
Galax 7, Carroll National 5: The first of two extra-inning wins over Carroll National saw Galax rally from a 4-0 deficit in the late game Saturday.
National scored four runs with two outs in the top of the first, only to see Galax answer with three in its first at-bat. Brandon Martin scored for a 5-3 Carroll lead in the third but Galax knotted the game at 5-5 in the bottom half with runs from Matt Lundy and Kolby Barnes.
Neither team scored again until Lundy and Barnes managed runs in the top of the seventh.
Carroll National 18, Alleghany 8: National bounced back from its Saturday loss in a big way Sunday afternoon, opening strong and finishing stronger in ousting Alleghany.
Carroll jumped to a 12-3 lead before Alleghany cut the gap to 12-8. National put the game away with a six-run rally in the top of the sixth. Brandon Martin and Weston Burcham scored three runs apiece for National.
Carroll American 12, Grayson County 1: While National was keeping its tournament run alive on Field 1, American was surviving on Field 2, breaking a 1-1 tie with seven runs in the top of the second.
American tacked on two runs in each the third and fourth innings and allowed just two Grayson baserunners over the final three innings of play. Jackson Hull scored three times for Carroll American.
Galax 8, Wythe West 3: The host team survived as the last unbeaten, shutting down West in the late game Sunday.
Cade Ashworth and Kolby Barnes scored in the top of the first to give Galax the lead for good.
Galax led 4-2 after three innings and tacked on three runs in the sixth before Josh Devine hit a solo home run, his third of the tournament, in the bottom of the sixth.
On Monday, Galax downed Carroll National in seven innings and Carroll American rolled over Wythe West to set up the final pairing.,
