MED season comes to a close...finally

After much delay, Grayson County thumped Bland County to clear the way for the MED tournament.


INDEPENDENCE -- Two district tournaments were crammed into one day to make room for this? In the final games of the Mountainee^Empire District regular season Thursday, Grayson County whipped up on Bland County 79-46, while Bland dealt Grayson a 55-27 defeat in the girls’ game. Regardless of the outcome, the boys’ game had no bearing on the final district standings, yet it was played, after two delays, forcing the MED tournament semifinals and finals to be wedged into one day, Saturday, along with the girls’ semis and finals atee^Fort Chiswell. Grayson County (18-3 overall, 7-1 district) opened up a 42-point lead, 68-26, through three quarters and put the finishing touches on its regular season championship. Jake Blizzard got Grayson off to a hot start with 15 points in the first quarter as the Devils jumped out to a 21-11 lead. Blizzard led all scorers with 19 points and Eric Harvey tossed in 17. Chase Hankins scored 13 points to lead the Bears (1-19, 0-8).

Bland County (16-2, 7-1) bolted to a 32-16 halftime lead and cruised the rest of the way behind 13 points from Laurel Hankins and 11 from Kirby Mustard. Alyssa Wingate led Grayson County (0-16, 0-8) with 13 points.
