Massive quarter leads Grayson over Chilhowie

 INDEPENDENCE –– Grayson County unleashed a 30-point barrage in the second quarter and squashed Chilhowie in the middle two periods of a 90-63 nondistrict win Friday night.

Ty Cannaday did half of the damage for the Blue Devils in the monster second period, hitting five 3-pointers as Grayson County (4-0) turned a 19-12 lead into a 49-30 advantage by halftime.

The Blue Devils outscored the Warriors a combined 56-35 in the second and third quarters to lead 75-47 going into the fourth.

Cannaday led four Grayson County scorers in double figures with 25 points, also accounting for seven assists and five steals. Max Rodgers scored 19 for the Devils, Lucas Rudy added 12 and Mikey Rodgers contributed 10 points.

Dylan Thomas had 18 points for Chilhowie, which dropped to 1-4 on the year. Reid Sturgill scored 15 points and Hunter Delp added 11.

Grayson County 57, Rural Retreat 41: The Blue Devils scored the first nine points of the second half to surge into a 10-point lead and pulled away from the Indians in a nondistrict game Thursday in Independence.

Grayson County (4-2) had taken a 27-26 lead into the half before outscoring Rural Retreat 19-6 in the third quarter.

Madison Shupe had a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Blue Devils, who snapped a two-game slide with the win. Camryn McGrady scored 19 points to go with eight boards, and Meredith Frost added 11 points.

Ashton Willard’s 15 points led the Indians, who got 11 points from Morgan Hyler.
