There was plenty of good to go around during the 2011-12 Twin County high school basketball season. Enough to last well into the summer, as it turns out.
Postseason accolades continue to find their way to all three area schools in the form of all-state teams, all-area teams and all-star team selections.
Carroll County’s Lindsay Martin has been named to the Virginia High School Coaches’ Association all-Group AA basketball team, three local players have landed on the Roanoke Times’ all-Timesland list, and four players and two coaches will participate in this summer’s VHSCA east-west all-star games in Hampton.
Martin helped lead Carroll County to its most successful season ever as the Cavaliers won their first Region IV championship and advanced to the state semifinals for the first time. A 5-foot-7 senior guard, Martin led the Cavaliers in scoring and steals, and was second on the team in rebounding, averaging 13.8 points, 6.5 boards and 2.2 steals per game.
Martin set a new school record for 3-pointers made in a season and in a career, hitting 59 of 141 treys on the year, or 41.8 percent. The Region IV player of the year was a 40-percent shooter overall and hit 73.8 percent of her free throws.
Martin was also named a first-team all-Timesland player, as was Galax center Lawrence Parsons. The all-Timesland team encompasses public and private schools of all classifications across the Roanoke Times coverage area, stretching from Chilhowie to Lexington. Parsons, the Group A Division 1 boys’ player of the year and the only single-A player on the Timesland first team, averaged 13.6 points 10.7 rebounds and 4.6 blocked shots, recording 15 double-doubles and three triple-doubles on the year, including one in the state semifinals.
Grayson County’s Max Rodgers was named to the all-Timesland Sizzlin’ Sophomore team after averaging 18.6 points and 7.5 rebounds.
Carroll County junior Ryan Gravley picked up honorable mention all-Group AA honors after earning the Southwest District player of the year award. The first-team all-Region IV pick averaged 15.2 points and 5.6 assists and was an 86 percent free throw shooter.
The VHSCA all-star games will be well-represented by the Twin Counties as Martin, Parsons, Deion George and Allison White have been chosen to participate in their respective sports.
George will represent Galax in football. The 6-3 all-Group A receiver led the Maroon Tide with 40 receptions for 864 yards and 19 touchdowns as Galax finished the season 14-1 as the Division 1 state runner-up.
White will play for the West team in the all-star volleyball game. A second-team all-Group A and second-team all-Timesland pick, White amassed 296 kills in her senior season, topping 1,000 for her career. She also had 236 digs and 101 blocks, helping the Maroon Tide reach the Group A Division 1 semifinals.
Harley Brewer, also of Galax, participated in the Southwest Virginia-Northwest Tennessee all-star volleyball game in February.
Rounding out the Galax connection, Verl Brown will coach the West team in the all-star basketball game, while Rose Houk continues her service as the volleyball game director.
