Maroon Tide wins another in the 7th

By Staff Reports

Galax won for the fourth time this season against Narrows, for the second time in four days, and for the third time by two runs or less.

This one was by far the most dramatic.

With the season on the line and trailing 10-5 in the bottom of the seventh, the Maroon Tide scored six times to rally for the Region C Division 1 quarterfinal win Monday at Felts Park.

Narrows (13-8-1) took its big lead into the seventh partly on the strength of a two-run Rodney Perdue home run and a solo shot from Will Patteson. But overcoming huge seventh-inning deficits was nothing new to the Maroon Tide. Galax had scored five in the bottom of the seventh to overtake Floyd County 15-14 on April 1 and scored six with two outs in the top of the seventh to stun Pulaski County 21-19 on April 10. Nor were close calls with the Green Wave anything new for Galax, which had recorded victories of 4-2 and 7-6 over Narrows in the regular season.

Monday, Caleb Pack slugged a two-run homer to help Galax draw even with the Green Wave, and with two outs, Nick Davis singled to drive in Chandler Quesenberry with the winning run.

The Tide rally included four hits, two walks and a hit batsman.

Galax moves on to the region semifinals today (Wednesday) at Casey Field against Covington.

Grayson County 4, Fort Chiswell 2: The Blue Devils came from behind with three runs in the bottom of the sixth Monday to edge the Pioneers in the first round of the Region C Division 2 tournament at the Grayson County Rec. Park.

Fort Chiswell (9-12) had dropped a 10-0, six-inning decision to Grayson County (17-6) in Friday’s Mountain Empire District semifinals, but carried a 2-1 lead into the sixth after scoring twice in the top of the first on a Brett Mabry hit a solo home run and an RBI double by Coleman Thomas.

The Blue Devils cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third but the Pioneer defense held the MED champs silent until the sixth. Ty Cannaday tied the game with an RBI single, and with one out, Spencer Roberts drove a two-run double to deep rightfield for the winning runs.

Cannaday pitched the final three innings to earn the win, including a 1-2-3 top of the seventh.

Grayson County advances to the region semifinals against Floyd County at 7 p.m. at James River High School.

Tazewell 7, Carroll County 5: The Bulldogs took advantage of six Cavalier errors to end Carroll’s season in the Southwest District tournament consolation game at Bill Worrell Field.

Trailing 1-0, Tazewell scored four unearned runs in the top of the second to take the lead for good.

Ryan Gravley had three hits and Kenley Meredith drove in three runs, including a two-run home run, for Carroll County (12-9).

SOFTBALL

Northwood 7, Galax 3: Taylor Ashworth’s three-run home run gave the Maroon Tide a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth, but the Panthers answered with four runs in their half of the inning to eliminate Galax in the Region C Division 1 quarterfinals in Saltville.

Northwood tied and then overtook the Maroon Tide with back-to-back RBI singles from Brooke Hagan and Lexi Hess. Peyton Stephenson added a two-run single later in the inning.

Michaela Carter retired Galax in order in the top of the seventh.

Carroll County 5, Richlands 0: The Cavaliers played their way into the Region IV tournament by winning the SWD consolation game Saturday in Abingdon.

Carroll scored runs on a pair of groundouts in the second and led 3-0 after a Cheyenne Strickland sacrifice fly in the fifth. Gracie Lindsey added a two-run triple in the sixth.

Gracie Davidson shut out the Blue Tornadoes on six hits, striking out three and walking none. Strickland and Eden Durnil each had two hits for Carroll.
