Maroon Tide takes track wins

HILLSVILLE -- Marleigh Durham and Devae Goins each won three events Wednesday as Galax swept both the boys’ and girls’ team wins in a track meet at Tommy Thompson Field. Durham won the high jump (4’2”), 800 meters (2 minutes, 50.38 seconds) and 400 meters (1:10.91) as the Maroon Tide racked up 73 points as a team. Fort Chiswell was second with 63.5 points, followed by Carroll County (57.5) and Grayson County (23). Allison White won a pair of events for Galax, taking the 300 hurdles (53.59) and 100 hurdles (18:34). Also winning for Galax was Danica Martin in the shot put (24’6.5”) and the 4x400 relay team. Carroll County won three events. Logan Wagner claimed the 100 in 14.0, Murphy Smith won the discus with a throw of 87’8” and Felicia Combs was the winner in the 3200 with a time of 15:36.08. Carley Smith picked up Grayson County’s lone win, taking the 1600 in 6:30. In boys’ action, Goins led the way with three of Galax’s six event wins. The Maroon Tide senior won the discus with a toss of 114’11”, recorded a triple jump of 36’4.5” and also won the 110 hurdles (17.59). Carroll County won eight events but fell short in the team standings as Galax edged the Cavaliers 79-71. Grayson County placed third with 44 and Fort Chiswell was fourth with 35. Jacob Ogle won the high jump with a height of 5’6” for Galax, which also got event wins from Devonte McKinney in the 300 hurdles (45.69) and Tyler Garman in the 800 (2:28.76). Carroll County’s winners were Hunter Grubb in the shot (38’9”), Kendall Haynes in the 1600 (5:08), Eric Marshall in the 400 (55.68), Lance Canon in the 200 (24.28) and Tyler Horton in the 3200 (12:43.15). Carroll County also swept the relay events. Xavier Rodriguez won the 100 for Grayson County with a time of 11.50. BASEBALL Grayson County 7, Radford 1: The Blue Devils scored five times in the final two innings to pull away from the Bobcats in a nondistrict game Wednesday in Radford. Tyler Rutherford tripled to drive in Ethan Hash, scoring on Brent Graham’s single for a 4-1 lead after six. Three walks and RBI singles from Spencer Roberts and Hash put the finishing touches on for Grayson (4-1). Jared Salts allowed one unearned run in three innings for the win. Dustin Leonard and Nick Perkins combined to allow one hit and strike out seven over the final four innings. Rutherford and Hash each had two hits for Grayson County. Galax 4, Chilhowie 3: Kyle Schaeffer had two hits, scored a pair of runs and pitched five innings as Galax edged the Warriors in a nondistrict game Thursday in Chilhowie. The Maroon Tide improved to 5-2 with the win. SOFTBALL Floyd County 12, Grayson County 2: Courtney Huff had two doubles and Shawna Harris had two RBIs as the Buffaloes overpowered the Blue Devils in a nondistrict game Thursday in Floyd.
