Galax needed 29 points to win the second set but knocked off Floyd County in three, 25-17, 29-27, 25-9 to open its volleyball season with a nondistrict win Tuesday in Galax.
Lindsey Ayers had 14 kills, Haley Reynolds came up with 14 digs, Susan Davis put up 16 assists and Sydney Lindsey added seven blocks for the Maroon Tide.
Patrick County 3, Carroll Co. 2: The Cougars pulled away in the fifth set to take a 10-25, 25-22 25-20, 21-25, 15-8 win in a nondistrict match.
Eustacia Smith had 16 kills, 15 serving points and 14 digs while Jessica Sheek provided 11 kills and nine blocks for Carroll County. Morgan Tompkins served for 18 points, Gracie Lindsey came up with 12 digs and Megan Alderman set up 19 assists for Carroll.
Graham edges Galax: Ben Ramsey and Zach Toohey shot a 76 and 77, respectively, as Graham took a win in a four-team MED match at Blue Ridge County Club.
Graham finished with a four-man total of 322, eight shots better than Galax’s 330. John Bryant of the Maroon Tide posted the individual low score with a 72, and Nick Sage turned in an 81 for Galax.
Grayson County was third at 352, led by the 80 of Tucker Phipps, and Fort Chiswell was fourth at 386.
Last week at New River Country Club, Graham took a seven-stroke win over the Maroon Tide in a match hosted by Grayson County.
Ramsey and Toohey again led the way with a 79 and an 82, respectively, as Graham shot a 343 as a team.
Bryant was again low man for the Maroon Tide. His 73 led Galax to a team total of 350, and Sage had an 86.
Phipps and Dylan Isom both shot 92 for Grayson County (374) and Fort Chiswell turned in a 401.
