Maroon Tide sweeps Warriors

-A A +A

Galax built big leads by halftime in both games, with the girls winning by nine and the boys by 31.

The failed alley-oop attempt from Justin Hash to Lawrence Parsons resulted in a quick exit for both players and a short but to-the-point sermon taken from the Book of Verl.

Far be it from the two Galax players to do any backsliding.

Upon re-entering the game, Parsons cruised along the baseline when he received a more conventional bounce pass from Hash, took one dribble and rattled the rafters with a two-handed flush, completing a three-point play to highlight a 75-44 trouncing of Chilhowie in a nondistrict game Tuesday night.

The win moved the Maroon Tide to 8-1 on the year and capped a 4-0 night for Galax, which took both varsity and JV boys’ and girls’ games. Chilhowie dropped to 4-8.

The Hash to Parsons play was the punctuation mark on a 17-5 run that spanned the third and fourth quarters and put Galax out in front 62-34. After opening the second half 1-of-8 from the floor and leading by just 10 points, the Maroon Tide connected on 16 of its final 28 field goal attempts to win going away. Up 38-28, the Tide closed the third quarter on a 15-1 run to all but seal the victory. Hash hit two 3-pointers and Eddie Hanks scored all six of his points in the third, which ended with Galax in front 53-29.

Chilhowie never found its shooting touch and hit just 3-of-15 in the third period, 4-of-15 in the fourth. It was a ragged end to an awful shooting night for the Warriors, who would connect on just 22.4 percent (13-of-58) on the night.

After hitting its first two shots of the game, Chilhowie made just one of its next 20 but still trailed just 11-9 after eight minutes. Hash splashed a 3-pointer and scored off of Jerad Brown’s steal to start the second quarter as the Maroon Tide began pulling away.

Brown scored six straight Galax points in one stretch of the second, Austin Pack had a pair of putbacks and Hash knocked down another trey to send the Tide into the half with a 33-19 lead.

Twelve of the 13 Galax players scored, led by Hash, who had four 3-pointers and 18 points to go with eight assists. Parsons finished with 11 points and Deion George grabbed 11 rebounds as the Tide dominated the glass 59-33. Rhett Sturgill paced the Warriors with 16 points.

GIRLS

Galax avenged its first loss of the year by building a 28-16 third-quarter lead and knocking off Chilhowie 44-35.

The Maroon Tide (8-5) had lost its season opener in Chilhowie by 17 points but took control Tuesday by outscoring the Warriors 18-9 in the second period. Bailey Shumate’s 3-pointer had the Tide in front 32-20 with 3:30 left in the third but Galax wouldn’t score again for nearly six minutes as Chilhowie (8-6) pulled to within 32-26 on two Danielle Catron foul shots with 6:54 to play.

Allison White connected on a runner and Hailey Cassell knocked down a 3-pointer to answer for Galax, which traded buckets with the Warriors the rest of the way.

Shumate scored 15 points and dished out five assists for Galax and Cassell added 13 points. White tallied 10 rebounds and six points.

Catron’s 13 points led Chilhowie.
