Fort follows up a 24-point loss to Grayson by dealing Galax its first loss in more than a year.

MAX MEADOWS –– After being hammered by 24 points the last time out on its home floor, one big question about Fort Chiswell was how would the Pioneers respond.

Quite nicely, as it turned out. Now the same must be asked of Galax.

The Maroon Tide saw its 31-game winning streak come to a halt Wednesday night as Fort Chiswell used a strong finish to take a 54-50 win in a Mountain Empire District game. The loss was Galax’s first since a one-point setback to Grayson County on Jan. 25 of last year.

“It’s off everybody’s chest now,” Galax coach Verl Brown said. “I knew it was a matter of time. We’ve been fortunate for about the last two weeks, winning these tight ballgames. Our three games this week, we knew all three could go either way. And we’re not out of the woods yet. We knew we would have to put points up to beat Fort, and they did what they had to do to win.”

The outcome was in a way symmetrical to what has been an asymmetrical MED season, at least among the Big Three. Fort edged Galax after taking a 29-point loss to the Tide two weeks ago.  The Pioneers were coming off a 24-point loss to a Grayson County team which they had handled by 19 points in those two teams’ first meeting.

Galax and Grayson meet Friday (tonight) in Independence. The Tide won the first meeting by 14.

The Tide was in good shape to extend its win streak to 32 games, leading 48-42 on a Devonte McKinney putback with 4:09 to play. Fourteen seconds later, the Pioneers’ Corey Gravely hit a free throw for the first point in what would turn into a decisive 10-0 run. Gravely gave Fort the lead for good by scoring off an offensive rebound, then capped the run with a layup for a 52-48 Pioneer lead with 1:05 left.

Deion George hit a 15-footer from the wing with 31 ticks left, and a tie-up on the inbounds play returned the ball to Galax with a chance to tie, but Lawrence Parsons’ jump-hook from the lane rolled off with 6.5 ticks to go. Nathaniel Worrell iced the win by hitting two foul shots.

A George trey and two McKinney buckets had Galax leading 20-13 early in the second period before Fort Chiswell knotted the game at 23 with a 10-3 run sustained by six free throws.

“I told the kids coming out of the locker room that the two things we had to do tonight was not commit many turnovers and not put them in a one-and-one early,” Brown said. “We did just the opposite of that.”

The two teams were tied five times in the second half before Galax took its late six-point lead.

Only four players scored for Galax, all in double figures, led by McKinney with 16. George tossed in 13, Pack scored 11 and Parsons added 10.

Worrell scored seven of his 16 points in the fourth quarter to lead Fort Chiswell. Gravely had 11 points and Cory Mabry scored 10.

“Maybe it’s a wake-up call,” Brown said. “Maybe we’ll think we’re not as good as everybody makes us out to be. We’ve got a good ballclub, but how do we handle it?”
