Maroon Tide posts another shutout

-A A +A

Galax is 2-0 for the first time since 2002 after blanking Alleghany 35-0.

By Ben Bomberger, Reporter

It may have been the kick-off of Bully Prevention Week at Galax High School, but the football players bullied their way to yet another dominating win Friday night at home.

The Tide (2-0) started the season with back-to-back wins for the first time since 2002 with a second straight shut-out.

Galax hosted neighboring Alleghany County (0-3) and dominated both sides of the ball, scoring on five of its first six possessions – including all three in the second quarter – to win 35-0.

The only victory of the night for the Trojans came on the coin toss. After moving the ball from his own 9-yard line to the Tide 33, Kyle Hoffman was picked off by Austin Pack inside the 15.

The Tide needed 13 plays and just 5:15 to go 86 yards and put its first six points on the board. Vaughan, who carried 17 times for 137 yards, crossed the goal line for the first time after barreling over two Trojan defenders for the final 2 yards.

After trading possessions—including a stalled drive inside the Trojan 5-yard-line for the Tide—Alleghany made a questionable call and paid the price. The Trojans—facing a fourth and five from their own 11-yard-line—tried to catch Galax sleeping and faked a punt. Galax’s defense wasn’t fooled and quickly tackled Ryan Billings as he tried to reach the outside corner.

The turnover gave the Tide a first down on the Trojan 11-yard line. One play and nine seconds later, Vaughan crossed the line for his second touchdown of the evening. Terrance Mazon found Vaughan for the two-point conversion pass and Galax led 14-0 with 6:45 left to play in the half.

Following a punt, the Tide took over on the Trojan 42-yard line and pounded the ball on the ground again. Vaughan carried on four of the five plays, including the final 19 yards and the Tide extended its lead to 21-0.

The Trojans managed one first down on their next possession, but again punted to Galax as time ticked away in the half.

With 1:12 left on the clock, Mazon walked to the line with 62 yards between him and the end zone.

The Galax senior took a quick three-step drop and released the ball down the right side line. Deion George had an easy two steps on the Trojan defender and collected the ball in full stride. Forty-four yards later, George was knocked out of bounds and in a matter of seconds the Tide was knocking on the door of another touchdown.

On the next play, Mazon hit George again on a fade route into the corner of the end zone and George easily hauled in his first touchdown of the night.

Vaughan finished the first half with 120 yards on 14 carries—an 8.6 yard average per carry. Mazon added 103 through the air in the first 24 minutes alone.

Galax began the second half with the ball and again wasted no time finding the end zone.

Starting on its own 12-yard-line, the Tide needed just five plays and 2:14 to score. George hauled in a Mazon pass and quickly scooted 63 yards to the end zone for his second touchdown of the night.

The extra point put the Tide up 35-0 at 9:39 of the third.

Though the Tide didn’t score again, the defense came up with a huge stop to secure the shutout early in the fourth quarter.

Humberto Garcia came from the backside untouched and blocked a Tide punt, setting the Trojans up with a short field.

On fourth-and-goal from the 7-yard line, three Tide defenders sacked Hoffman for an 8-yard loss.

Galax moved to 2-0 on the season and has allowed zero points in the opening eight quarters of the 2010 season.

Next week the Tide will travel to Eastern Montgomery (2-0) for a battle of the unbeatens.
