Maroon Tide hosts XC invitational

Galax's boys won another team title at Walker's Run meet.

 WOODLAWN –– Galax placed second in the girls’ standings and fifth among boys’ teams as it hosted the Maroon Tide Invitational cross country meet Wednesday at the Southwestern Virginia Training Center.

Led by top-20 finishes by Megan Boyles (11th), Lindsey Ayers (13th) and Jennifer Laws (18th), the Maroon Tide finished with 75 team points and was able to hold off Patrick Henry-Glade Spring for the runner-up spot behind Radford.

Marleigh Durham ran to a 23rd-place finish and Kelsey Williams was 34th for the Tide.

Grayson County, Auburn, Glenvar and Floyd County rounded out the girls’ teams.

Kaitlin Smith of Radford took the individual title with a winning time of 20 minutes, 32 seconds ahead of John Battle’s Miriah Arnold. Carley Smith of Grayson County was third overall in 20:59. She was followed by Layken Parks in 16th, Olivia Wyatt (33rd), Hayley Reavis (38th) and Allison Smith (41st) for the Blue Devils.

Elise Zyvlosky finished in ninth place for Carroll County, Lindsey Brumfield was 27th and Beth Proffit (55th) ran a personal-best 28:31 for the Cavaliers.

Floyd County’s Andrew Grubb outlegged Walker Mogen of Radford for the boys’ individual win, finishing in 16:37 to Mogen’s 16:53. Radford took the team title with 60 points, followed by Floyd County (87), Marion (107), John Battle (123) and Galax (134).

Travis Cockerham led Galax with a 14th-place effort, Kendall Haynes of Carroll County was 18th, and Galax took places 27-29 with Eddie Hanks, Justin Ayers and Dyllan Taylor. Austin Bunn paced Grayson County with a 31st-place showing.

Susan Davis of Galax placed fifth in the JV girls’ race, Carroll’s Zach Cockerham was second in the middle school boys race, and a trio of area runners – Galax’s Ashley Jordan and Carroll’s Sophie Webb and Gracie Puckett – led the girls’ middle school event.

Walker’s Run: Galax’s boys claimed their fourth team championship in five years at the Walker’s Run Invitational, hosted by Marion at Hungry Mother State Park.

Travis Cockerham led a field of 129 runners across the line, taking the individual win with a time of 17:28. Kevin Loftin posted a ninth-place finish while Justin Ayers and Eddie Hanks placed 14th and 15th, respectively. Dyllan Taylor came in 21st as the Maroon Tide finished with 50 points, 29 points ahead of Tennessee High.

Carley Smith placed sixth for Grayson in the girls’ race. Megan Boyles led Galax in 26th, and Elise Zyvlosky paced Carroll County in 27th.
