SPARTA, N.C. -- Galax used a 12-0 run to start the second half and survived a last-ditch 3-point shot to edge Elkin, N.C., 64-62 in the Alleghany Shootout Tuesday at Alleghany High School. In a game that featured five ties and a pair of lead changes in the final 3:35, Galax (6-1) fell behind three times before getting tying baskets from Deion George, Bryan Martin and George again, the latter knotting the score at 60 with 1:59 to go. Elkin (3-4) took its final lead when Damon Smith sank two foul shots at the 1:53 mark, and the Maroon Tide soon turned the ball back over to the Elks, but George came up with a steal and went to the foul line, hitting both shots to re-tie the game with 1:21 to go. Galax had hit just one of its first 10 foul shots up to that point, including going 0-for-5 on possible momentum-shifting three-point play opportunities. An Elkin turnover set up the winning possession for the Maroon Tide. With just less than a minute to play, George drove the left side of the lane, pulled up and dropped in a soft 8-foot jumper from the baseline. Elkin missed three shots on its end of the floor, but Galax missed the front end of a one-and-one, grabbed the rebound and missed another free throw before Jermaine Hayes’ 3-point shot at the buzzer bounced off the rim. Galax had to scramble to keep the Elks from taking a sizeable lead into the half, as Smith scored on a baseline move and Tre Hayes knocked down a 3-pointer to give Elkin a 28-20 lead midway through the second quarter. But Devae Goins’ steal set up a Michael Bond lay-in, George swished a 3-pointer and Terrance Mazon scored off a loose ball to pull the Maroon Tide to within 29-28. The Elks crept back out to a five-point lead before Goins finished the half with a basket from the paint for a 33-30 halftime lead for the Elks. Goins’ bucket would actually be the first points in what would evolve into a 14-0 run. Galax scored the first dozen points of the second half, hitting five of its first seven shots from the floor. Martin scored in transition and then nailed a trey, followed by a Justin Hash 3-pointer and a fast break bucket by Goins before the Elks burned a timeout, trailing 42-33.  Jermaine Hayes hit a 3-pointer coming out of the timeout, and the Elks worked their way back to within reach, finally catching the Maroon Tide at 54-all when Hayes hit the first of a three-shot foul with 3:35 to play. George led three Maroon Tide scorers in double figures with 14 points, and grabbed 11 of his 12 rebounds after halftime. Goins tossed in 12 points and Michael Douglas was solid with 10 points and six rebounds. Smith led all scorers with 19 points for Elkin, which got 12 points from Jermaine Hayes.    Galax............16  14  18  16––64 Elkin, N.C.......17  16  10  19––62
