Maroon Tide golfers win three of four

Galax's golf team put in some miles over the course of last week, playing four matches in four days and coming away with three wins.

Monday at Great Oaks Country Club in Floyd, the Maroon Tide got 39s from Kyle Schaeffer and Scott Alouf to down Floyd County 159-184. Dustin Thompson shot a 40 for Galax, while Brock Cox carded a 41.

Galax's B team also came away with a win Monday as Matthew Downey's 40 led the Tide to a four-man score of 172. Jacob Woodel (43), Will Crawford (44) and Travis Cockerham (45) also contributed.

Tuesday at Wolf Creek Country Club in Bastian, a young Maroon Tide lineup finished off the pace to Fort Chiswell, which won a three-team match with a 163. Galax was second at 176, followed by host Bland County's 217. Fort's Seth Carico won individual medalist honors with a 38, followed by teammate Matt Sweet's 39. Downey and John Alouf each shot 42 for Galax, which also got a 46 from Woodel and Travis Cockerham.

Galax moved on to Draper Valley Golf Club on Wednesday, taking a win in a three-way match with Fort Chiswell and Grayson County. Scott Alouf (36), Cox (37) and Thompson (38) paced Galax to a team score of 151 while the trio of Rob Guynn, Eddie Hanks and Schaeffer each finished at 40. Grayson County finished one stroke behind Fort Chiswell, turning in a 178 behind Tyler Bond*s 40. Tyler Rutherford shot a 44, Jessup Lambert finished at 45 and both Cody McGuire and Richard Pugh turned in 49s.

Carico led the Pioneers to the second-place spot with a 39.

The busy week wrapped up Thursday with a trip to The River Course in Radford, where the Maroon Tide took home a win in a four-way match.

Cox tied for medalist honors with a 37 as Galax finished with a four-man 157. Scott Alouf, Guynn and Thompson all finished at 40 for Galax.

Radford's Zeke Shaffer shared honors with Cox at 37 as the Bobcats finished with a 167, good for second place. Christiansburg was third with a 171, and Grayson County finished fourth at 184. Bond paced the Blue Devils with his 41.


Galax def. Bland 3-0: The Maroon Tide upped its record to 2-1 in the Mountain Empire District with a 25-7, 25-18, 25-23 win Thursday over the Bears in Galax.

"We finally came together as a team," Galax coach Rose Houk said. "We played with a lot of enthusiasm, and I'm really proud of the girls."

Jenna White put up 20 assists for Galax, which improved to 7-6 overall with the win. Many were on Jamie Cockerham's 16 kills. Arianna Sexton had three blocks and Kelsey Reedy came up with eight digs.
