Galax scored nine of its 10 runs in the third and fourth innings and cruised to a 10-1 win over Fort Chiswell in a Mountain Empire District game Wednesday at Mountain View Park.
Leading 1-0 entering the bottom of the third, the Maroon Tide used a two-run Taylor Ashworth home run to highlight a four-run outburst.
Galax (6-11 overall, 5-3 district) added five runs in the fourth, doing all the damage with two outs. Ashworth and Morgan Neff each had an RBI double in the big inning.
Ashworth was 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lead the Tide and Holly Cassell went 2-for-4 with two runs driven in.
Cassell also picked up the pitching win, giving up one earned run on six hits, striking out 10 against one walk while getting errorless defense behind her.
Galax 20, Bland County 3: The Maroon Tide broke open a one-run game with a huge third inning and hammered the Bears in a five-inning MED game Tuesday in Bastian.
Leading 5-4, Galax scored nine runs in the third, coupling five hits with three walks and three errors.
The Maroon Tide added six runs in the fourth on two hits, five walks and two hit batters.
Holly Cassell got the complete-game win, scattering five hits and giving up one earned run, striking out eight. Offensively, Cassell was 2-for-4 with five RBIs.
Brittany Byrd had a double and a triple while Taylor Ashworth and Brooklyn Key had two hits each.
Galax 8, Fort Chiswell 2: The Maroon Tide kept rolling and won its 15th straight match Tuesday in Max Meadows.
Junior Espinosa scored three goals for Galax (15-0, 7-0) and Denver Nuckolls added one goal and an assist. Daniel Hix, Sam Hix and Isaac Tracy also scored for the Maroon Tide.
Zane Gregory scored both goals for the Pioneers (5-9, 2-6).
Tide finishes strong: Galax wrapped up the regular season portion of its schedule with four shutout wins, including a pair of 9-0 victories over Narrows on Tuesday.
Paige Hanks, Claire Engelhardt, Susan Davis, Sydney Lindsey, Lindsey Ayers and Carleigh Pack all won a pair of singles matches for Galax (12-4).
Earlier, Galax didn’t drop a single game in nine individual matches in a 9-0 win over Fort Chiswell, which was followed by a 9-0 win over Bland County.
The doubles team of Hanks and Davis finished the season with a spotless 16-0 record and will enter MED tournament play next week as the top seed. Hanks will also compete in the singles tournament.
