INDEPENDENCE -- Galax opened the second half on an 11-2 run to get some breathing room and held off Grayson County 53-40 in a Mountain Empire District girls’ game Wednesday evening.

The Maroon Tide (9-8 overall, 2-3 district) led 27-21 at halftime before taking control early in the third quarter. Taylor Bryant scored on a stickback and then swished a 3-pointer for Galax to open the second half, and Burgandy Bobbitt scored twice from the paint as the Galax lead grew to 36-19 midway through the third. Hailey Cassell drained a 15-foot jumper a minute later and Galax enjoyed its largest lead of the night, 38-19. Grayson County (0-14, 0-5) trimmed the gap to 12 points late in the third as Devin Osborne’s 3-pointer pulled the Devils to within 40-28, and Grayson eventually got as close as 10 points late in the fourth. Galax went scoreless the first 3:37 of the fourth as Grayson closed to within 42-31, but Bailey Shumate scored in transition to end the Maroon Tide’s drought with 4:23 to go. Shumate fed Bobbitt for a layup before Jessica Caudill drained a 3-pointer followed by an Osborne jumper from the lane as Grayson closed to within 46-36 with 3:17 to play. Shumate widened the lead to 13 points with a trey from the left wing, and the Blue Devils weren’t able to take advantage of a golden opportunity, getting just two points out of a possible six-point possession.  A personal foul and a technical foul gave Grayson County four free throws and possession trailing by 13, but the Devils managed to hit just two foul shots and then turned the ball over on a Channing Russell steal that set up a Shumate breakaway. Grayson County was holding its own early on, tying the game at 8-8 on a Vaughan basket underneath, but Galax used a Russell trey, a Cassell steal and lay-in and an Allison White bucket to pull out to a 15-10 lead, never to trail again. The Tide closed the half with a flurry as Bryant connected from the lane and Russell hit two free throws, then swiped a Grayson pass and ended the half with a layup for a 27-19 lead at intermission. Bryant led all scorers with a career-best 15 points. Osborne paced the Blue Devils with 11 points.    Galax.......................13  14  13  13––53 Grayson County......10   9    9   12––40
