Galax opens its second season of competition with back-to-back wins.

Galax’s girls’ soccer team opened the season on a high note, taking wins over Bland County and Giles last week.

In the season opener against Bland County on Tuesday, Chantasy Cottrel, Meagan Madrigal, Mireida Martinez and Sonia Solis all scored in the Maroon Tide’s 4-0 win over the Bears. Goalkeeper Abbi Ponce stopped all eight Bland County shots she faced. Wednesday in Pearisburg, the Maroon Tide blanked Giles 4-0 behind two goals by Cottrel and single goals from Madrigal and Solis, plus three Ponce saves.   BASEBALL Auburn 10, Galax 1: The Eagles took advantage of a big day by Jacob Underwood in claiming a nondistrict win Thursday in Felts Park. Underwood tossed a complete-game three-hitter and was 2-for-3 at the plate for Auburn. He struck out eight and walked none. Auburn led 2-0 in the fourth when four errors and a Ryne Scott sacrifice pushed three runs across for a 7-0 lead. Shane Cummings doubled and scored on an error in the fifth for Galax’s only run. He collected two of the Maroon Tide’s hits on the day.   Auburn......020  301  4––10  10  3 Galax........000  010  0––  1   3   4
