Maroon Tide girls claim 10th win

 MAX MEADOWS –– Galax improved to 10-2-1 on the year with a 5-0 shutout win over Fort Chiswell in a MED girls’ soccer match Tuesday.

Mirieda Martinez scored twice from outside the box to lead Galax.  Chantasy Cottrell converted a Sonia Solis assist for a goal, Alexandra Moreno set up Jessica Salinas for a goal and Kelsey Williams scored unassisted for the Maroon Tide.

Abbi Ponce had the shutout in goal for Galax.

Galax 4, George Wythe 3: Chantasy Cottrell and the George Wythe goal became very familiar with one another in a nondistrict match Monday in Galax.

Cottrell accounted for all four Galax goals, while Abbi Ponce stopped nine Maroons shots to preserve the lead.

Abingdon 9, Carroll Co. 0: Lauren Morelock’s four-goal night lifted the Falcons to an easy win Tuesday night.

TRACK

Galax took an big win in the boys’ team standings while the Maroon Tide and Carroll County shared the girls’ lead in a meet last Wednesday in Galax involving MED schools plus Carroll.

Megan Boyles won the 800 for Galax while Carroll County got event wins from Murphy Smith (shot), Rachel Dalton (400) and Morgan Dickens (3200) as the two teams finished with 87 points apiece.

Carley Smith won the 3200 for Grayson County, which also took the 4x400 relay and was fourth as a team.

Galax won five boys’ events and racked up 110 points to Grayson County’s 59. Carroll County and Fort Chiswell tied for third with 54 apiece.

Darius Brown (discus), Austin Pack (high jump), Dante Peoples (400), Travis Cockerham (800) and Chandler Quesenberry (3200) were event winners for Galax.

Grayson County got wins from Tyler Pauley (3200) and Darren Anderson (shot).

SOFTBALL

Radford 7, Galax 6: The Maroon Tide nearly rallied back from a 7-1 deficit only to come up short in the bottom of the seventh in a nondistrict game Monday in Galax.

Katlynn Mohr’s two-run single highlighted a three-run sixth and gave new life to Galax, which continued its comeback in the seventh. 

Two errors, a walk and a Grace Wilson single accounted for two runs and Wilson advanced to third but was stranded as the game ended.

Harley Brewer had three hits for Galax and Haley Reynolds added two hits and scored three runs.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Abingdon 2, Carroll Co. 1: Tyler Eschle scored twice for the Falcons in a SWD win Tuesday over the Cavaliers in Abingdon.

Steve Wood scored Carroll County’s lone goal.
