Galax wrapped up the Mountain Empire District regular season championship Tuesday night and teamed up with Narrows to help out a worthy cause, bouncing the Green Wave in three sets in a Mountain Empire District volleyball match Monday night.

In what is becoming an annual event at both schools’ home match against the other, Volley for a Cure resulted in a 25-20, 25-16, 25-17 win for the Maroon Tide.

Galax improved to 21-1 overall, 9-0 in MED play.

“Our team continues to look impressive,” Galax coach Rose Houk said. “Our girls are doing so many good things as a team. Narrows is a good team and we pretty much shut them down in the second and third games.”

After a relatively close first-set win the Maroon Tide built commanding leads in the second and third. Galax led 9-7 in the second set when Grace Wilson served for six straight points to kick off a 12-1 Tide run. Bailey Shumate had two kills and two dinks for winners during Wilson’s serve before a Narrows kill interrupted the spurt. The Tide won the next five points and eventually took a 24-11 lead, more than enough to withstand a five-point Green Wave run near the finish.

Galax didn’t wait around to pile up the points in the third set. A Savanna Burton block had Narrows leading 4-2 when the Maroon Tide scored 10 of the game’s next 11 points. Given the serve on a Narrows net violation, Shumate fired an ace and Allison White added three kills for a 9-4 lead.

An errant serve was the only glitch in the Galax run as the Tide got a sideout on White’s smash.

Two Harley Brewer blocks helped widen the margin to 20-8 before another late Narrows run closed the gap a bit.

Shumate finished with 14 kills, 10 serving points and 10 digs and White put away 11 kills to go with four blocks. Brewer had six blocks and five kills, Taylor Bryant added five kills and three blocks while Wilson put up a dozen assists.

Carroll Co. def. Marion 3-1: The Cavaliers avenged an earlier loss to the Scarlet Hurricane, taking a 25-18, 11-25, 25-23, 26-24 win in a Southwest District match in Hillsville.

Ashley Willard put away 17 kills and Lexi Hodge had nine kills, 22 serving points and 17 points for Carroll County. Autumn Hill and Jessica Sheek each had a huge defensive effort at the net with 11 and nine blocks, respectively. Autumn Fink came up with 26 digs while Morgan Dickens had 24 assists and 16 digs.

Richlands def. Carroll Co. 3-0: The Cavaliers had no answer for the Blue Tornado, falling 25-6, 25-22, 25-10 in a SWD match last week. Willard and Dickens each had five kills to lead Carroll (10-7 overall, 3-3 district).
