Maroon Tide clinches another golf title

 SPARTA, N.C. -- Galax wrapped up the Mountain Empire District regular season golf championship Tuesday, taking a three-team match hosted by Grayson County at New River Country Club.

Brock Cox led the Maroon Tide to a four-man team score of 156 by winning individual medalist honors with a 36. Galax’s Matt Downey finished in a three-way tie for second with a 39, joining Ben Thompson of Narrows and Grayson County’s Tyler Rutherford. The Maroon Tide’s John Bryant was fifth with a 40, one stroke ahead of teammate and sixth-place finisher Eddie Hanks. Kyle Schaeffer and Dustin Thompson of the Maroon Tide each turned in a 42. Grayson County held off Narrows 174-176 for second in the team standings. The MED tournament is scheduled for Sept. 28 at Blue Ridge Country Club. VOLLEYBALL Floyd Co. def. Galax 3-1: Galax saw its eight-match winning streak come to a close with a 25-15, 25-18, 23-25, 25-18 nondistrict loss Thursday in Floyd. The Maroon Tide (8-3) struggled with its passing in the first two games and gave away five points on missed serves in the second before rallying in the third game. Galax trailed just 17-15 in the fourth before the Buffaloes pulled away. Allison White managed 12 kills to go with three blocks despite having three blockers in her face much of the night. Jenna White put up 13 assists and Bailey Shumate had 15 digs. Jenna White led the Tide serving with 10 points. Carroll Co. def. Marion 3-1: The Cavaliers remained undefeated in Southwest District play with a 25-14, 25-14, 20-25, 25-15 win Thursday in Marion. Dionna Reece and Maleah Neely led the attack for Carroll County (7-1 overall, 2-0 district) with 15 and 10 kills, respectively, and the two combined for five blocks. Neely added 22 assists and Kim Marshall put up 15 assists to go with 20 service points for the Cavaliers. Galax def. Narrows 3-0: The Maroon Tide bounced back from Wednesday’s loss with a 25-18, 25-13, 26-24 win in an MED match Thursday in Narrows. Allison White put away 13 kills and Jenna White had 15 assists for the Maroon Tide (9-3, 3-0). Drew Cardwell served for 10 points and Shumate had 10 digs. Narrows (5-4, 0-1) was led by Savannah Burton with 12 kills and two blocks and Brianna Ogden with 22 assists. Rural Retreat def. Grayson Co. 3-0: The Blue Devils dropped a nondistrict match Thursday night as the Indians’ Laura Stamper served for nine aces. Jenna Dix had 14 kills for Rural Retreat (7-2). CROSS COUNTRY Giles Invitational: Galax placed fourth in the girls’ team standings and fifth in the boys standings at the Giles Invitational, held Sept. 9 at Giles High School. Carley Smith of Grayson County was the highest-finishing Twin County runner in the girls’ race, finishing in 21 minutes, 48 seconds to take 13th place in the field of 89 runners. Marleigh Durham paced Galax with her 17th-place finish in 22:05, followed by teammates Lynsey McChesney (28th, 23:21), Sydney Brewer (32nd, 24:07),  Jennifer Laws (55th, 26:23) and Marie Orton (62nd, 27:17). Grayson County’s Lakyn Parks placed 31st in 23:57, and Carroll County was led by Casey Lawson (33rd, 24:14) and Felicia Combs (37th, 24:27). Travis Cockerham ran a career-best time for a three-mile course of 17:56 to place 12th individually for the Maroon Tide boys. Jimmy Oliver of Grayson County was 18th in 18:21 and Carroll County’s Kendall Haynes placed 25th in 18:44. Kevin Loftin (35th, 19:10), Dyllan Taylor (41st, 19:34), Trevor Quesenberry (44th, 19:45) and Andres Flores (60th, 20:44) rounded out Galax’s top five in the field of 120 runners.
