BLAND -- Galax pushed its district volleyball record to 4-0 Thursday night, taking a 25-16, 25-21, 25-11 win  over Bland County in a Mountain Empire District match. The Maroon Tide (11-3 overall) got a strong all-around game from Bailey Shumate, who finished with nine kills, 15 serving points, four aces and 14 digs. Allison White had 13 kills and two blocks, and Jenna White put up 17 assists to go with eight digs. Galax jumped out to big leads in the first and third games, but had to come from behind after trailing 10-5 in the second. Shumate served for nine unanswered points as Galax took a 17-11 lead and held on for the win. “We had much better starts in game 1 and game 3,” said Galax coach Rose Houk. “We got into a good rhythm of pass-set-hit. We were strong at the net because of our good passing and setting.” Carroll Co. def. Graham 3-0: The Cavaliers also improved to 4-0 in the district after a 25-14, 25-15, 26-24 Southwest District win Thursday in Bluefield. Maleah Neely and Dionna Reece combined for nine aces, with Neely serving for 18 points and Reece adding 13. The two also led the way at the net with nine kills by Reece and seven by Neely. Reece, Neely and Singleton had six digs apiece, while Neely had 14 assists for the Cavaliers (10-1 overall).
