Maroon Tide, Cavalier girls stay unbeaten

 Marleigh Durham scored a pair of goals, Sonia Solis converted a penalty kick and Chantasy Cottrell also had a goal for Galax as the Maroon Tide girls’ soccer team extended its season-opening win streak to four matches with a 4-1 nondistrict win Thursday over Rural Retreat.

Mireida Martinez had one assist for Galax.

Abbi Ponce and Jessica Zuniga split time in goal for the Maroon Tide and combined for seven saves, five by Ponce.

Graham 8, Carroll Co. 0: Jessica Woodie scored five goals as the G-Girls rolled to a Southwest District win Thursday in Bluefield.

Graham remained unbeaten at 3-0 (1-0) while the Cavaliers dropped to 0-3 (0-1).


Carroll Co. 10, Pulaski Co. 5: Autumn Hill, Lexi Hodge and Ragan Halsey each had three hits as the Cavaliers doubled up the Cougars in a nondistrict game Wednesday in Hillsville.

Hill also slugged a home run for Carroll County.

Carroll Co. 10, Marion 0 (5 inn.): The Cavaliers opened SWD play Thursday with a five-inning bashing of the Scarlet Hurricane in Hillsville.

Ragan Halsey and Eden Durnil drove in three runs apiece for Carroll County (5-0, 1-0). Lillie Kimble picked up the pitching win, striking out five.


Carroll Co. 3, Graham 3: Ulises Moreno scored a late goal to help the Cavaliers stave off defeat as they settled for a draw in a SWD match Thursday in Bluefield.

Steve Wood and Tanner Edwards also scored for Carroll County, which rallied three times from a one-goal deficit.


Galax 8, Ft. Chiswell 1: The Pioneers claimed the No. 1 singles match before the Maroon Tide swept the rest of the afternoon in an MED match Thursday in Felts Park.

Ryan Williams, Ty Cornett, Kenley Adams, Jacob Patton and Trevor Anders all won singles matches for Galax (3-0, 1-0).

Grayson Co. 5, Bland Co. 4: The Blue Devils won four of the six singles matches but needed a win at No. 3 doubles to hold off the Bears in an MED match Thursday in Bland.

Grayson County (4-0, 1-0) got wins by Mike Vaughan, Jacob Parnell, Ben Horton and Tyler Farris in singles and the third doubles team of Parnell and Horton.

Galax 5, George Wythe 4: The lower seeds pulled the Maroon Tide through in a nondistrict match Wednesday in Galax.

After a 3-3 deadlock in singles play, George Wythe won at No. 1 doubles as did Zack Marshall and Jake Patton for Galax at No. 3. Ty Cornett and Kenley Adams pulled through with a three-set win at No. 2 doubles to seal the team win.
