Maroon Tide boys topple Graham, Galax girls knock off Bland County

Galax used double-digit advantages in the first and fourth quarters to roll to a  49-33 Mountain Empire District girls’ win over Bland County Friday in Galax.

The Maroon Tide (8-6 overall, 2-0 district) outscored the Bears a combined 35-15 in the two periods to remain unbeaten in MED play.

Allison White had 10 points, 13 rebounds and five steals and Bailey Shumate dropped in a team-high 12 points for Galax.

Bland County (4-9, 1-3) was led by Kelsey Dinger with 10 points.

Carroll County 60, Tazewell 45: The Cavaliers jumped out to a big early lead and swamped the Bulldogs in a Southwest District game Thursday in Hillsville.

Lindsey Martin knocked down five 3-pointers and scored 22 points for Carroll County (7-4, 4-0), which led 39-20 at halftime. Shyann Dalton added 12 points for the Cavaliers.

Tazewell (5-7, 1-4) got 10 points from Taylor Catron.

Graham 51, Galax 29: The G-Girls took an early lead and dealt the Maroon Tide a nondistrict defeat Wednesday in Bluefield.

Liz Workman and Mariah Lampert led Graham (11-1) with 11 and 10 points, respectively. 

Haley Reynolds scored seven points to lead Galax (8-6).

Floyd County 71, Carroll County 46: The Buffaloes outscored the Cavaliers 21-9 in the third quarter to take control, cruising to a nondistrict win Monday in Floyd.

Krista Cox led four Floyd scorers in double figures with 18 points. Emmalene Hale had 16 points while Karina Miller and Amanda Hollandsworth scored 10 each.

Lindsey Martin scored 16 points and Rachel Dalton added 10 for Carroll County, which saw an end to its six-game winning streak.

Galax 50, Bland County 40: The Maroon Tide led by just four points at halftime before pulling out a tough MED win Friday in Galax.

Devonte McKinney was Galax’s only double-figure scorer, hitting all 11 of his points in the first half for the Tide (10-1, 2-0). Asher Dillow’s 13 points were high for the Bears.

Carroll County 92, Tazewell 59: Mac Martin’s double-double paced the Cavaliers, who ran past the Bulldogs in a SWD game Thursday in Hillsville.

Martin dropped in 20 points and gathered 12 rebounds to lead four double-figure scorers for Carroll, which led 43-26 after two quarters.

Wes Smoot (16 points), Conner Lundy (15) and Kody Alley (12) also hit double figures for the Cavaliers (7-5, 3-2).

John Walker’s 24 points led the Bulldogs (4-6, 0-2).

Galax 66, Graham 57: The Maroon Tide rode a strong second half to the nondistrict win Wednesday in Bluefield.

Trailing 30-26, Galax outscored the G-Men 40-27 after halftime. Deion George led three scorers in double figures with 17 points. Justin Hash scored 12 and Devonte McKinney added 10.

Graham’s Jordan Bryan had eight points and 10 rebounds, surpassing the 1,000-point mark for his career.

Carroll County 67, Richlands 47: The Cavaliers dominated the second period and rolled over the Tornado in a Southwest District game Saturday.

Trailing 12-11 after one quarter of play, Carroll County got five 3-pointers from four players in the second quarter, outscoring Richlands 27-11 to take a 38-23 halftime lead.

Mac Martin led all scorers with 21 points while Ryan Gravley and Connor Lundy tossed in 15 points apiece. Gravley also had nine assists and five steals for the Cavaliers, who outscored the Blue Tornado 19-10 at the foul line.

Richlands was led by Aaron Johnson and Devon Johnson with 14 points each.
