RICHMOND –– Galax’s cross country team doesn’t mind covering a lot of ground by bus in order to cover a little ground by foot.

In the middle of a stretch of events that sees the Maroon Tide run in Cary, N.C., Richmond and Charlotte, Galax’s boys placed fifth in their division at the Maymont Cross Country Festival at Maymont Park.

The Maroon Tide’s Cliff Conley and Dustin Matthews both hustled their way to top-10 places and four runners posted finishes among the first 36 in the field of 138 runners.

Conley ran a time of 16 minutes, 53 seconds on the 3.1-mile course, placing fifth in the division and finishing less than 20 seconds behind individual champion Johnny Pace of Westfield.

Matthews was just six spots back of Conley and placed 10th with a time of 17:18.

Chandler Quesenberry and Daniel Hix posted solid finishes in the 30s, with Quesenberry placing 31st in 17:48 and Hix coming in 36th in 18:00. Solidifying the Tide’s team finish was Dominic DiGiacomo, who placed 89th in just his third race of the season, running a 19:18.

Andres Moreno had a time of 20:22 for Galax, just ahead of  Edgar Guzman’s 20:29.

DiGiacomo’s effort helped Galax hold off Turner Ashby by two points in the team standings, which included 21 high schools. Westfield claimed three of the first eight individual spots to take the team title, followed by Clover Hill, Baldwin, Canon-McMillan and Galax.

The Maroon Tide fielded three runners in the girls’ race, with Lindsey Ayers recording a time of 24:03, Keely DeZern running a season-best 24:08 and Kelsey Williams posting a 25:18.
