Galax basketball coach Verl Brown may be doing all he can to get the football out of his team, but he couldn’t stop his boys from opening up a three-touchdown lead.

The Maroon Tide scored the game’s first 21 points and went on to hammer Narrows 72-37 in a Mountain Empire District game Friday. The win upped Galax’s record to 11-0, 5-0 in the league, while Narrows dropped to 6-9, 0-5.

It took barely three seconds for the Maroon Tide to take the lead for good, with Devonte McKinney scoring off the opening tip. McKinney had eight points in the game’s first 3:08 and Deion George knocked down a pair of 3-pointers, including one for a 21-0 lead at 3:16 of the first.

Galax hit nine of its first 14 shots from the floor and forced turnovers on eight of the Green Wave’s first nine possessions. Narrows missed its first five field goal attempts, finally getting on the scoreboard with two Chandler Burton foul shots with 2:40 left in the first quarter.

Eddie Hanks nailed a pair of 3-pointers in the final two minutes of the half, and converted a sweet pass from George into a layup to send Galax into the intermission with a 37-18 lead.

The Maroon Tide led 40-22 when it exploded with another 21-0 run in the third period. Austin Pack scored 12 straight points in one stretch, including a two-hand dunk, and George capped the run with a baseline move for a 61-22 lead at 1:07 of the third.

Jacob Kohl opened the fourth with a three-point play and scored seven points in the period’s first 2:14, and Jacob Fisher added a pair of layups late in the quarter to finish the big night by the Tide.

Pack led the Maroon Tide with 18 points, George had 15, Hanks dropped in 12 and McKinney added 11. Burton led the Green Wave with 18 points.
