Man pleads guilty to assault

HILLSVILLE — A 40-year-old Hillsville man has received more than seven years to serve in prison after pleading guilty last Thursday to a sexual assault, according to police.
Charles Robert Rigney appeared in Carroll County Circuit Court to answer charges of attempted rape by fear or force and object sexual penetration from Aug. 4, 2013, incident, according to a news release from the Hillsville Police Department.
Capt. James Alderman, Master Patrol Officer Dennis Boyer and Officer Josh Edwards of the Hillsville Police Department responded to a 911 call at the Hills Motel from the victim in the case.
(Authorities do not reveal the identity of victims in sexual assault cases.)
After his plea of guilty to object sexual penetration, the court gave Rigney a sentence of 20 years with 12 years and 10 months suspended, leaving him with more than seven years to serve in prison, according to the news release.
Rigney will be on 10 years of probation after his release and will have to register as a sex offender.
