Man leads Galax police on chase into N.C.

An Alabama man is in custody in Surry County, N.C., facing charges in relation to a pursuit that began in Galax on June 30.

According to a Galax Police Department report, Officer John Reavis stopped James Curtis Brown, 50, of Boaz, Ala., for suspicion of driving under the influence at 6:42 p.m. on June 30.

When Brown was asked to exit his car, he fled the scene in his vehicle, pursued by Reavis and Galax Officer Jacob Vaughn. On two occasions, Boaz traveled west in the eastbound lanes of U.S. 58, according to police.

The chase continued into North Carolina, where Galax officers were joined by members of the Surry County Sheriff's Office and North Carolina Highway Patrol.

The chase ended in North Carolina, where Boaz was caught and charged with reckless driving and DUI. He is also charged with being a fugitive from Virginia.

Boaz faces multiple charges in Virginia for felony eluding, DUI, reckless driving and failing to stop for blue lights and sirens.
