Police say a 34-year-old man hung himself from a tree in full view of users of the New River Trail near Dannelly Park on Aug. 30.

A trail user called authorities at about 5:49 p.m. to get help from the Carroll County Sheriff's Office and rescue squad personnel. The man used two dog leashes to hang himself from a pine tree, according to a deputy's report.

The body was taken to Vaughan- Guynn Funeral Home by Pipers Gap Rescue Squad.

The man and a girlfriend had been living in a tent on a piece of land adjacent to the trail, according to the police report. Last Tuesday, he and his girlfriend had a verbal argument and the man walked off.

The girlfriend went to look for him and found him in a tree. She asked a passerby to call for help on their cell phone.
