INDEPENDENCE –– Grayson County scored eight runs in the first three innings and held Patrick Henry-Glade Spring in check all afternoon, taking an 8-0 win in the Region IV baseball quarterfinals Tuesday at the GNB Baseball Complex.
Senior right-hander Jessup Lambert allowed just two hits on the day in taking the complete game win. He got plenty of support in the early going as the Blue Devils turned a 1-0 lead into a 5-0 gap in the second inning. A leadoff double by Jared Salts was followed by a walk and a hit batter before Cody Underwood knocked in two runs with a double. A bases-loaded walk and an Ethan Hash ground ball pushed across a run apiece.
Salts led off a three-run third with a walk, scoring on Ben Osborne’s double. Willie DeBord later doubled to drive in two runs for an 8-0 lead.
DeBord finished the day 2-for-4, driving in three runs. SOCCER Cave Spring 5, Carroll County 0: The Knights blanked the Cavaliers in a Region IV quarterfinal Monday in Roanoke.
Taylor Woodrum, Patrick Moody, Ben Nowak, Ben Harris and Simon Urrea scored for Cave Spring.
Cave Spring 8, Carroll County 3: The Knights unloaded for six runs in the sixth inning to take a Region IV quarterfinal win Monday in Hillsville.
Leading 1-0, Cave Spring connected for seven hits in the sixth inning, including two doubles and a triple.
Carroll County (9-10) scored all three of its runs in the bottom half of the inning on a Danielle Spence single and doubles by Leanna Rippey and Lillie Kimble, but Olivia Ferguson capped the Knights’ win with a solo home run in the seventh.
Rippey and Kimble were a combined 5-for-6 for the Cavaliers. Taylor Parris was 3-for-3 for Cave Spring, which got two hits each from Ferguson and Monica Boatwright.
Carroll County reached the regionals as the Southwest District’s fourth seed after falling 3-1 to Abingdon in the SWD consolation game Friday. Grace Ayers singled and scored on Rippey’s base hit to cut the Falcons’ lead to 2-1 in the fourth, but the Cavaliers could get no closer. Nicole Hawks had a pair of hits for Carroll County.
Northwood 14, Galax 0: Chelsea Cardwell tossed a no-hitter as the Panthers eliminated the Maroon Tide in the Region C quarterfinals Monday in Saltville.
Cardwell, a freshman, was two walks away from a perfect game, striking out 12.
Kendra Nutter drilled an inside-the-park home run to highlight an eight-run third inning for Northwood.
