With three people vying for two seats set to expire June 30, Helen Kyle and Ray Kohl were reappointed by Galax City Council to serve another term on Galax School Board, during Monday’s council meeting.
Jerrold Bennett of Galax also interviewed with city council members to be considered for one of the two positions.
After going into a closed meeting, council members came back out to vote on the three candidates. Council Member Bob Lazo voted for Bennett, while the other members supported the reappointment of Kyle and Kohl.
The three-year term will begin on July 1.
During a public hearing at Galax City Council on Feb. 27, Kyle, Kohl and Bennett were interviewed by Galax City Council during a closed meeting. Each candidate also shared with council, in open session, why they should be selected to serve on the board.
Kohl, who has served on the board for several years, told council that he would like to remain on the board because the school system is heading in the right direction.
“It is my belief that continuity on the board is critical at this time as we face difficult budgetary times...,” Kohl said in his letter of interest.
Kyle, a former city council member, has just completed her first term on the school board. She told city council that it is important to her that each child receives quality education.
“My first three years went swiftly as our board faced challenges as well as opportunities,” she said in her letter of interest. “I look forward to continuing my work with such a cohesive board as we strive to serve the children of our commonwealth.”
