INDEPENDENCE — A former Grayson County High School teacher and volunteer football coach was found not guilty in Grayson County Circuit Court last Friday of a felony charge of taking indecent liberties with a child, following a two-day trial.
Robert Eugene Pope of Elk Creek was charged Aug. 30, 2010. The alleged incident involved a student that was 17 years old at the time.
A jury of six men and six women deliberated 35 minutes before rendering their verdict of not guilty.
Pope testified in his own defense that the incident never happened.
He was represented in court by Hillsville attorneys Joe McGrady and Gregory G. Goad.
Two other misdemeanor charges — assault and buying tobacco for a minor — were dismissed.
