Dylan Isom’s biggest contributions this year arguably came from the pitching mound. It says a lot about the overall year Isom had that the Grayson County senior was voted all-state in what was his second position.
Isom, one of many key components in a season that saw the Blue Devils reach the state semifinals, was voted first-team all-Group A as a third baseman to go with having earned first-team all-Region C and Mountain Empire District player of the year honors.
Isom’s big year highlighted a list of nine Twin County players named to their respective all-district teams, including all-region performers Max Rodgers of Grayson County and Reece Edwards of Carroll County.
Isom, the Blue Devil ace right-hander, compiled a 9-1 record and a neat little 1.01 earned-run average this year, striking out 64 batters in 56.2 innings of work. Isom was also a solid defensive third baseman and batted .300 with 19 RBIs, six doubles and one home run.
Rodgers was selected as an all-Region C and second-team all-Group A outfielder after batting .380 with 23 runs, 26 RBIs and 10 doubles.
Edwards, a junior, made the all-Region IV first team as a utility player, having contributed time on the mound, behind the plate and in the outfield for the Cavaliers. Offensively, Edwards finished with a .435 batting average, 14 RBIs, five doubles and 16 runs. As a pitcher he compiled an 0.72 ERA in 39 innings, striking out 55.
Joining Isom and Rodgers on the first-team all-MED squad were Galax’s Caleb Spurlin and Grayson’s Lucas Rudy, Spencer Roberts, Matthew Cornett and Landon Frost.
Spurlin, a freshman outfielder, led the Maroon Tide in batting (.429), RBIs (20) and doubles (9).
A four-year starting catcher, Rudy batted .390 with 35 runs scored, 19 RBIs, eight doubles and a homer.
Roberts, a senior shortstop, was a .439 hitter with 35 runs, 28 RBIs, 13 doubles and nine stolen bases.
A pitcher and multi-position infielder, Cornett was a first-team utility player after hitting .380 with 24 runs, 25 RBIs, one home run, eight doubles and 10 steals.
A senior centerfielder, Frost led the team with a .500 average in 72 at-bats, finishing with 23 runs, 24 RBIs, one homer and 10 doubles.
Rounding out the first-team all-district picks was Carroll County senior Ryan Gravley, an all-SWD shortstop. Gravley batted .322 on the year with 22 runs and eight steals.
Second team all-SWD picks for Carroll were first baseman Kenley Meredith (.310, 16 RBIs) and pitcher Seth Burris (5-3).
Second-team selections on the all-MED team were Galax pitcher Logan Beamer (5-1, 2.02), second baseman Caleb Pack (.296, 14 RBIs), outfielder Daniel Larrowe (.311, 17 runs, 20 sb), designated hitter Alex Zipprich (.299) and utility man Bryant Cox (.366, 18 RBIs, 2 hr, 5 doubles) as well as Grayson County pitcher Ty Cannaday (3-3, 3 saves).
Honorable mention picks were Carroll County’s Josh Underwood, Galax’s Stew Merdian, Nick Davis, Chase Garvey and Chandler Quesenberry and Grayson County’s Dylan Morris, Gavin Bailey and Luke Wilson.
Bryan Patteson of Narrows, Norman Dillow of Bland County and Bobby Parnell of Galax shared the district coach of the year award.
In Region C, Skip Thompson of Auburn (Division 1) and Bill Wells of Glenvar (Division 2) were the coaches of the year. Chilhowie’s Forrest Haga was voted the player of the year in both Region C and Group A.
