INDEPENDENCE — Two Main Street businesses were heavily damaged in a 4:45 p.m. Friday fire. Both Paul's Restaurant and Quik Check received the damages in the fire of unknown cause. The fire was reported around 4:45 p.m. and everyone inside the restaurant and Quik Check, the adjoining convenience store, were evacuated safely. Independence Volunteer Fire Department, Galax Volunteer Fire Department and Elk Creek Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene and battled the fire for about an hour before bringing it under control. The restaurant had fire damage while the Quik Check had heavy smoke and water damage. No damage estimate was immediately available, but Quik Check owner Paul Pickett said he has insurance.
