Huge half propels Galax to win

-A A +A

Galax bolted to a 49-point halftime lead and improved to 5-0 with a 49-14 win over Craig County.

By Staff Reports

NEW CASTLE –– Galax rolled to a 49-0 halftime lead and remained undefeated on the year, swamping Craig County 49-14 in a nondistrict game Friday night.

The Maroon Tide (5-0) got one big play after another in the high-scoring first half, starting with its special teams. After holding the Rockets (2-3) to a three-and-out, Galax was on the board the first time it touched the ball when Deion George returned a Craig County punt 77 yards for a touchdown. Eli Brady knocked through the first of his seven PAT kicks for a quick 7-0 Galax lead.

George had three long touchdowns before the first quarter was over, nabbing an Austin Pack pass for a 60-yard score and later a 57-yard touchdown reception from Pack to close the first period with Galax leading 28-0.

In between George’s two TD receptions, Jordan Vaughan ripped off a touchdown run of 35 yards.

Vaughan added a 1-yard scoring burst early in the second period as Galax’s lead swelled to 35-0.

Donte Peoples went 80 yards for a touchdown the first and only time he touched the football, and Steven Peoples scored from 10 yards away late in the half, sending the Tide into the locker room with a 49-0 lead.

Thanks to the huge lead, Galax was able to absorb a couple of long scoring plays by the Rockets in the fourth quarter. Mark Oulette put Craig County on the board with a 61-yard scoring run, and Cody Dunbar broke loose on a 75-yard scamper later in the fourth.

Galax outgained the Rockets 374-192 in total offense, with all of Craig’s yards coming on the ground. Donte Peoples led the Maroon Tide with his one 80-yard carry, Steven Peoples added 70 yards on six attempts and Vaughan carried five times for another 66 yards.

Pack was 2-for-2 passing for 117 yards, with both completions to George.

Galax is off this week before opening the Mountain Empire District portion of its schedule with a home date Oct. 7 against two-time defending MED champion Fort Chiswell.
