The Blue Ridge Panthers placed third in the western division at the North Carolina Home Educators Athletic Conference Basketball Championships, held in Winston-Salem Feb. 20-21. The win moved the Panthers to the state basketball championships, held Feb. 27-28 in Greensboro.
This year’s regional and state tournaments showcased more than 50 teams comprised of more than 500 homeschool basketball players.
This is only the second year of competition for the Panthers. They have spent the past two seasons competing against other homeschool basketball teams across Western North Carolina with their longest road trip being to Asheville, N.C.
Team members include Rachel Bennett, Daisy Clark, Kate Clark, Rachel Clark, Amelia Collins, Pierce Collins (mgr.), Joye Harrison, Bekah Morton, Jessica Vass, Sarah Wagg, Cassidy Williams and coach Larry Clark.
The Blue Ridge Panthers Homeschool Athletic Association is available to all homeschoolers in the Twin Counties. This is a Christian-based association with the goal of complimenting, not overshadowing, the spiritual and intellectual training being carried out in homeschool settings.
The association consists of middle school girls’ basketball and is hoping to add JV girls,’ middle school boys’ and JV boys’ teams for the 2009-10 season. Teams are available for any homeschooled boy or girl ages 11-16. The teams are currently working on forming next season’s schedules.
If interested in joining this organization, call (276) 768-8207 or (276) 238-2400 before March 20.
