The Galax Recreation Center will get a special visitor on March 16 as the Virginia Tech Hokie Bird makes an appearance.
Hosted by CenturyLink, the event is an opportunity for kids and adults to come out and meet him in person.
“There are so many Virginia Tech fans in the area,” said Simone Alley, CenturyLink representative. “We wanted to do something fun for the community, so we invited the Hokie Bird to fly down for a special appearance.”
The mascot will be available for autographs and photos from 5:30-7:00 p.m.
Representatives from Houstonfest, a new music festival in Galax, will also be on hand. “Houston was the son of a CenturyLink employee, and we’re really pleased to be able to sponsor this exciting new festival,” added Alley.
In addition, organizers will be collecting food for Willing Partners food bank. The first 100 kids who bring at least three food items will get a free T-shirt.
“There will be games, music, and fun for everyone,” said Alley. “We hope the entire community will stop by. It’s just one of the ways we give back and say 'thank you' to our customers.”
The recreation center is at 601 S. Main St. in Galax.
