A two-vehicle crash caused injuries to a local woman and her daughter and resulted in a two-mile backup on Interstate 81 on Monday morning, Virginia State Police Sgt. Rob Carpentieri said.
Sharon Shafer, 54, of Hillsville was driving a Ford Explorer in the northbound right lane and attempted to switch lanes, Carpentieri said. In the process, she struck a Hyundai Sonata in her blind spot, causing both to run off the road, overturn and strike an embankment near mile marker 109, Carpentieri said.
Shafer's daughter, April Shafer, 28, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the SUV. She was flown to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. April Shafer was listed in critical condition Monday.
The driver of the Hyundai, Patricia Bonowski, 73, of Philadelphia, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to Carilion New River Valley Medical Center.
Sharon Shafer, who was wearing a seat belt and suffered minor injuries, also was taken to New River Valley Medical Center.
Shafer was charged with making an unsafe lane change and failure to maintain proper control of her vehicle.
