HILLSVILLE — Voices will be raised in praise at the first-ever Gospel Day June 1 in Jail House Square in Hillsville, a musical event meant to appeal to locals and visitors alike.
David Young, Pipers Gap Ward representative on Hillsville Town Council, long wanted to stage a gospel music celebration to go along with the slate of beach bands that play the summer Downtown Celebrations.
Young feels pleased by the harmony he has already found among local officials, such as the Carroll County Board of Supervisors agreeing to sponsor the first event as a tourism-related idea.
Gospel Day is not being paid for by the town.
The Freemans and the Dixie Echoes will perform, and their promoter will advertise the event in “The Singing News” and www.singingnews.com, “the country’s largest Christian music publication.”
Locals can also get the word out about Gospel Day at the Memorial Day flea market, Young added.
Individuals involved in the planning for Christian Family Fun Day last year will assist in making Gospel Day happen.
Young would like organizers to find enough local groups to provide hours of music leading up to the evening concert.
“This is an event that I hope all churches will be a part of,” he said. “I’m wanting for this to be God’s day.”
He also hopes there will be enough sponsors to schedule another event in August. Mayor Greg Crowder and Keith Andrews Produce have promised their support, as well.
Young would like Gospel Day to become an annual event, like the Downtown Celebrations.
Planning meetings will begin this month. Those who would like to participate may call Young at (276) 733-8824.
