BOYS

Grayson County 61, Pocahontas 70

Winless in district play for seven years, Pocahontas’ first W came against one of the Mountain Empire District’s perennial title contenders.

The Indians got 25 points from Brandon Pauley, including the 1,000th of the junior’s career, and held on to a big early lead to claim a 70-61 win Friday night.

Pocahontas (9-9 overall, 1-6 district) had blown several chances this season to end a losing streak that began following a January, 2001 win over Rocky Gap. But a 21-12 first-quarter lead held up throughout the night for the Indians.

Jon Corner added 12 points for the Indians. Grayson County (2-16, 1-6) was led by a pair of freshmen – Tyler Rutherford and Eric Harvey – with 15 points apiece. Chris Anders scored 12 for the Blue Devils.

GIRLS

Grayson County 53, Pocahontas 24

The winless Indians hung with the first-place Blue Devils in the second and fourth quarters, but Grayson County remained undefeated in district play by outscoring the hosts 32-10 in the first and third periods Friday night.

Taking a 12-point lead after the first quarter, Grayson County led just 23-16 at halftime before using a 16-6 third-quarter to take command.

Mikaela Anders had 25 points and seven rebounds for the Blue Devils (12-5, 6-0), who traveled to Fort Chiswell for a key MED game last night (Tuesday). Julie Fitzgerald’s eight points led the Indians, who fell to 0-18, 0-6.
