Harrison's Gun & Ammo, at 971 E. Stuart Drive in Galax, has expanded its merchandise to become the largest full-service gun shop in six counties, said owner Tony Harrison.
When Harrison's Gun & Ammo opened in October 2009, it started with 196 guns. Now it offers 540 new and used guns, has expanded its archery selection and offers an array of accessories. Anything that is not available can be ordered and shipped to the store overnight.

The shop grew so fast, hours were extended and the shop had to be expanded from 1,000 to 1,800 square feet.
Volunteers Bobby Bowers and Curtis Bolen perform minor repairs to guns, and volunteers Alan Hines and Joe Richardson work with archery.
Harrison, of Fancy Gap, travels three days a week selling insurance but decided to open a gun shop to have something to do when he retires and a have place to sell the 200 high-quality firearms he had collected for 20 years.
Harrison had set up and sold his guns by attending gun shows every other weekend, but it took so long to load and unload his collection from his vehicle, he decided to open his own shop. Now, he only attends Hillsville's Labor Day Gun Show each year.
An avid turkey and deer hunter who never misses a season, Harrison said his grandpa taught him to rabbit hunt when he was 11, and he killed his first deer when he was 13.
“I've been around guns all my life, and I've dreamed for many years of opening my own gun shop,” said Harrison, who will spend most of his time in the shop when he retires in four years.
Harrison's Gun & Ammo supports local hunters, as well as community organizations, such as the local Special Olympics team. The shop recently sponsored little league baseball with Carroll County Recreation Department.
“The community is very supportive,” said Harrison. “Some are just now hearing about us or will see our sign and come in for the first time. The local law enforcement is supportive of what we do, and we're supportive, as well.”
