Though not a mass layoff, Hanes in Galax has let go six employees as it prepares to sell its yarn manufacturing operations to Parkdale Mills, a yarn manufacturer based in Gastonia, N.C.
Hanesbrands, based in Winston-Salem, N.C., announced last month that it would stop making its own yarn and turn that operation over to Parkdale, which operates a plant in Hillsville.
Parkdale will take over operations of the Hanesbrands yarn plant on Glendale Road in Galax, as well as plants in Rabun Gap, Ga., and Mountain City, Tenn., which have a combined 780 employees.
