Volney Baptist Church honored its pastor, the Rev. Doug Halsey and his wife Jean, with a surprise lunch in the church’s fellowship hall after morning services July 21.
The fellowship hall was decorated for the occasion with flowers, candles and balloons. There was a four-tiered cake and family photos. About 80 people attended.
The couple were presented with a scrapbook covering their 50 years together as well as the years they have been at the church.
The couple were married in the old church building on Aug. 6, 1963 by the Rev. Willard Reedy, who was pastor there at the time. Only the immediate families were present.
The Halseys have two children, Cindi Custard of Waynesboro and Paul Halsey of Volney; and four grandchildren, Raya and Eric Custard and Jarrett and Marisa Halsey.
Halsey has been pastor of the church for 41 years. His wife Jean teaches the preschool class and plays piano.
The Rev. Halsey celebrated his 50th year of ministry on Jan. 20 of this year.
