BASTIAN –– Grayson County opened the game with 11 runs in the top of the first inning Thursday and cruised to a 26-1 Mountain Empire District baseball win over Bland County.

Lucas Rudy, Spencer Roberts, Matthew Cornett and Landon Frost each drove in three runs for the Blue Devils. Roberts and Cornett had three hits apiece, Rudy was good for two hits and Dillon Isom cracked a solo home run for Grayson (10-5, 5-1). Carroll County 4, Floyd County 2: The Cavaliers rallied with three runs after the fifth inning to overtake the Buffaloes for the nondistrict win Thursday in Floyd.

Doubles by Cody Beamer and Ryan Gravley cut a 2-0 Floyd lead in half in the third. The score remained 2-1 until the sixth, when Kenley Meredith singled to knock in Gravley with the tying run. Carroll took the lead later in the sixth when Reece Edwards scored on a double steal.

Nathan Snow trotted home on a Gravley sacrifice fly in the seventh for some insurance. Floyd County managed to get two baserunners on in each the sixth and seventh but Meredith, in relief of Seth Burris, was able to close the door and earn the save. Burris got the win with three scoreless innings on the mound.

Gravley had two of the Cavaliers’ five hits. Josh Gallimore went 3-for-3 for the Buffaloes.

Grayson County 12, Patrick County 2: The Blue Devils were held hitless until the fifth inning but made up for it in a hurry, rolling over Patrick County in six innings in a nondistrict baseball game Wednesday in Independence.

The Cougars led 2-0 and Brandon Turner carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the fifth when Ty Cannaday led off with Grayson’s first hit, a single. Following a walk, Lucas Rudy knotted the score with a two-run double.

The Blue Devils went off in the sixth, scoring 10 runs to end the game on the 10-run rule. Landon Frost had an RBI double and Spencer Roberts added a two-run double, and Frost would later rip a three-run home run for the 10-run margin.

Frost was 2-for-4 with four RBIs, Rudy went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three driven in and Max Rodgers was 2-for-4. Rodgers pitched a scoreless top of the sixth to pick up the win.

The Blue Devils improved to 9-5, ending a three-game slide.

Floyd County 1, Grayson County 0: Christene Phillips had two hits and drove in the game’s only run as the Buffaloes claimed a close win in a nondistrict game Wednesday in Independence.

Grayson County (9-3) had a seven-game winning streak snapped with the loss.

Chelsea Callahan had two base hits for the Blue Devils and was saddled with the pitching loss despite holding Region C’s top-rated team to a single run.

Grayson County 8, Galax 1: The Maroon Tide took the No. 1 singles win but the Blue Devils swept the remaining eight matches, earning the MED team win Thursday at Felts Park.

Caleb Bartlett overcame a first-set loss to Garrett Bailey and pulled through with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win for Galax’s lone win. Mike Vaughan, Jake Parnell, Grayson Holdaway, Nick Brewer and Ryan Boyer all won their singles matches in straight sets for Grayson County.
