Grayson picks up pair of wins

  INDEPENDENCE –– Grayson County scored 14 runs in the first three innings Tuesday and improved to 7-0 in the Mountain Empire District with a 16-0 shelling of Bland County at GNB Park.

Run-producing singles by Matt Cornett and Max Rodgers gave the Blue Devils (9-7 overall) a 2-0 lead after the first, and Grayson tacked on five runs on three swings as part of a seven-run second.

All seven runs crossed with two outs, starting with a Landon Frost RBI single. Cornett singled to drive in two and Rodgers followed with a two-run double. Rodgers’ hit was the first of three straight doubles by the Devils as Ty Cannaday and Johnny Warren each added an RBI double.

Spencer Roberts singled in two runs in a five-run third.

Rodgers was 2-for-2 with five RBIs, adding a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Lucas Rudy scored four times. Cornett, Warren, Dylan Isom and Frost added two hits for Grayson County, which also drew a dozen walks.

Isom pitched three innings and Cannaday mopped up, teaming up to hold the Bears to four hits.

Grayson County 14, Tazewell 1: The Blue Devils jumped on the Bulldogs for nine first-inning runs and rolled to the nondistrict win Monday at Lou Peery Field.

Max Rodgers got the big inning off to a bang with a three-run home run. Johnny Warren ripped an RBI double and Grayson got consecutive run-scoring base hits from Landon Frost, Lucas Rudy, Spencer Roberts and Matt Cornett.

Gavin Bailey kept Tazewell offstride for five innings, picking up the win by giving up one earned run on four hits, including two bunt singles.

Frost, Warren, Rodgers and Roberts had two hits apiece for Grayson County. 


George Wythe 5, Galax 1: Courtney Crump scored twice and assisted on another goal as the Maroons took down the Maroon Tide in a nondistrict match Tuesday in Wytheville.

Alexandra Morena scored Galax’s goal and Lindsey Ayers stopped 11 Wythe shots.


Galax 10, Narrows 0: Junior Espinosa and Andres Medina combined evenly for six of the Maroon Tide’s goal total in an easy MED win Tuesday in Narrows.

Isaac Tracy, Miguel Lopez, Dominic DiGiacomo and Jose Rojas scored once each for Galax.

Galax 5, Fort Chiswell 2: Recording the first of two hat tricks on consecutive days, Espinosa found the net three times as the Tide got past the Pioneers in an MED match Monday in Max Meadows.

Rojas scored first for Galax (10-1-1, 8-0) and Mario Carranza added a goal and an assist.


Galax 7, Graham 2: The G-Men took the top two singles seeds before the Maroon Tide swept the remaining matches in an MED contest last week at Felts Park.

Ty Cornett, Kenley Adams, Jacob Patton and Caleb Bartlett won straight-sets singles matches. Cornett and Dylan Taylor edged Conner Wilson and Hasan Muzaffar 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles.


Devils win two of three: Grayson County bounced back from a close loss to Bland County to take a pair of 9-0 wins over Fort Chiswell in MED matches last week.

Tied 3-3 with Bland after singles, the Tide dropped two of three in doubles play as Bland eked out the 5-4 win.

Grayson County followed with 9-0 wins over the Pioneers on consecutive days. The Blue Devils got forfeit wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles as well as at No. 3 doubles, and picked up singes wins from Anna Turnmire, Adanna Cheek, Shannon Gamble and Laken Newman.
