Grayson names top teacher

INDEPENDENCE — Tonya Lawrence, a second grade teacher at Independence Elementary School, has been chosen the Grayson County Teacher of the Year for the 2011-12 school year.
Teachers of the year were chosen from all eight Grayson County schools.
They included: Baywood Elementary – Tina Peters; Fairview Elementary – Samantha Jones; Fries School – Amber Watkins; Grayson County High School – Deborah Greif; Grayson County CATE Center – Kimberlee Moxley; Grayson Highlands School – Ashley Starkey; Independence Elementary – Tonya Lawrence; Independence Middle School – Jessica Farina.
Each teacher received a certificate of appreciation and a $25 gift card.
Lawrence received gifts totaling $1,674 donated by businesses in Grayson County and the surrounding area.
Lawrence was presented flowers by Dr. Elizabeth Thomas, schools superintendent.
In her remarks, Thomas said Grayson County was blessed with good teachers who were dedicated to their students.
"Teachers are the most important ingredient in education," she said at the awards banquet. "Teachers make the difference in educating our students."
