Grayson girls, Carroll boys lock up titles

NARROWS –– Grayson County broke away from a tight game with an overpowering second half and clinched the Mountain Empire District girls’ regular season championship with a 53-36 win Wednesday over Narrows.

The Blue Devils (17-4 overall, 8-1 district) led just 23-22 at halftime before outscoring the Green Wave 30-14 in the final two quarters of play.

Camryn McGrady and Meredith Frost led Grayson County with 15 and 14 points, respectively.

Narrows (4-15, 1-7) got a game-high 18 points from Tiffany Perdue.

Galax 49, Bland County 36: The Maroon Tide moved back into the No. 2 slot in the MED standings, pulling away in the second half for the win Wednesday.

Bland County (3-17, 1-8) hung around and trailed just 18-14 at intermission but Galax (12-8, 6-3) controlled the second half, 31-22.

Carolyn Vaughan led the way with 21 points for the Maroon Tide and Susan Davis added 11 points. The Bears were led by Amber Eaton with 12 points.

Galax 56, Narrows 32: The Maroon Tide opened the game on a tear and capped its regular season with the 24-point win Friday in Narrows.

Galax (13-8, 7-3) built an 18-point cushion by the end of the first quarter and led 34-12 by halftime.

Susan Davis scored a team-high 12 points and Carolyn Vaughan chipped in 10 points for Galax, which tied with Graham for No. 2 in the district but will take the No. 3 spot in this week’s MED tournament by virtue of a preseason tiebreaking draw.

Graham 51, Grayson County 36: The G-Girls dominated the second half Friday and spoiled the regular season finale for the district champion Blue Devils in Independence.

Grayson County (17-5, 8-2) held Graham to 15 first-half points and took a four-point lead into intermission, but the G-Girls outscored the Blue Devils 36-17 in the second half to win going away.

Emaleigh Gallinger and Taylor Williams led Graham with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Meredith Frost and Camryn McGrady scored nine points each for the Blue Devils.

Carroll County 73, Richlands 35: The Cavaliers secured the Southwest District regular season championship with an overpowering performance Thursday in Richlands.

Chris Smoot hit three 3-pointers and led four Cavaliers in double figures with 15 points. Ryan Gravley added 12 points while Connor Lundy and Austin Horton scored 10 apiece.

Carroll County (20-1, 7-0) built a 14-point lead by the end of the first quarter and took a 40-14 advantage into the half.

Richlands (2-16, 0-8) was led by Gabe Hunsaker with nine points.

Galax 67, Narrows 44: The Maroon Tide got a big night from Dominic DiGiacomo and Chase Garvey and ended the regular season with its second straight win, knocking off the Green Wave in an MED game Friday in Narrows.

DiGiacomo scored 13 points and Garvey added 10 for Galax, which finishes the regular season at 4-15, 3-7, and will enter the MED tournament as the No. 5 seed.

Six different Galax players hit at least one 3-pointer each, including two by DiGiacomo.

Chandler Burton scored 13 points for Narrows (8-14, 0-10) and Gavin Givens had 12.

Grayson County 68, Graham 52: The Blue Devils rallied out of an 11-point first-quarter hole and controlled the game over the final three periods, wrapping up a perfect run through the MED with the win Friday in Independence.

Ty Cannaday was on fire for Grayson County (17-5, 10-0), going 6-for-7 from beyond the 3-point line and scoring a game-high 22 points. Lucas Rudy added 16 points for the Blue Devils.

Spencer Sheets led Graham (15-7, 7-3) with 15 points and Colby Hill scored 14.
