Grayson fiddlers' convention starts Friday

ELK CREEK — Grayson County will hold its 41st Annual Old-Time and Bluegrass Fiddlers' Convention at Elk Creek School Ball Park starting today, Friday and continuing Saturday.

The two-day event will feature $3,300 in cash prizes.

Registration remains open for contestants until show time — set to begin at 5 p.m. tonight and 3 p.m. tomorrow.

Admission to the convention will be $6 on Friday and $8 on Saturday, or a two-day pass is available for $12. Camping is also available for $5 per day.

Friday will feature competitions in folk song, dulcimer, Autoharp, old-time banjo, bluegrass fiddle, bluegrass and old-time bands and flatfoot dance.

Saturday will feature the youth competition, as well as competitions in folk song, dobro, bass fiddle, mandolin, old-time fiddle, bluegrass banjo, guitar, adult dance, children’s dance, bluegrass and old-time bands and adult flatfoot dance.

All awards will be presented Saturday night, with youth awards presented prior to the bands performing.

The youth competition will be judged as a category. The top-5 instrumental performers will be given a trophy, with all others receiving a rosette.

Contestants may enter individual instruments one time only and individuals may enter in one band only.

The event is sponsored by Elk Creek Volunteer Fire Department and Ladies Auxiliary.
