MAX MEADOWS –– Grayson County has looked like the team to beat as the Mountain Empire District girls’ basketball teams worked their way through the nondistrict portion of their schedules. The Blue Devils still very well may be that team, but they’re starting out in a hole.

Fort Chiswell got it done from the foul line in the final minute and surprised Grayson County 67-59 Friday, opening MED play with a huge win.

The Pioneers (7-3 overall, 1-0 district) outscored the Blue Devils 11-3 over the final 2:15, with nine points coming on free throws, to drop Grayson to 7-4, 0-1.

The Blue Devils took their last lead, 58-57, when Madison Shupe dished off to Camryn McGrady for a layup with 2:00 on the clock, but Grayson County would manage just a single free throw in the final two minutes.

Fort Chiswell took the lead for good 12 seconds later when Sarah Whisman scored from the paint, and Hannah Hovencamp hit two foul shots with 54 seconds to play.

Grayson County pulled to within two points when Shupe hit one of two free throws with 38 seconds to go, but the Blue Devils had two missed shots and a turnover the rest of the way while the Pioneers hit six straight from the free throw line.

Grayson County took a 28-25 lead into the half before Fort Chiswell opened the third quarter with a 10-2 run. Fort’s Amber Chrisley scored the first six points of the second half and capped the run with a steal and layup for a 35-30 lead at 5:12 of the third.

Grayson County answered with a 9-2 run starting with six straight McGrady points. Emily Hart’s 3-pointer had Grayson back in front 41-39 with 2:20 left in the third.

The teams were tied four times until Shupe scored off a loose ball to finish off a 7-2 Devil run for a 55-51 lead midway through the fourth. Fort Chiswell answered with  three-point play from Whisman and regained the lead on a steal and layup from Chrisley, who would lead all scorers with 20 points. Whisman added a strong 19 and Sadie Smith scored 12 for Fort Chiswell.

McGrady scored 17 and Shupe added 16 for Grayson County, which got 13 from Hart.
