Grayson County tops Galax to reach title game

 Grayson County finished with a 9-2 run and pulled away from host Galax in the second round of the Grayson National Bank Holiday Classic girls’ tournament Friday.

Galax (3-3) closed to within 36-34 on a Lindsey Ayers free throw with 4:43 to play but the Blue Devils iced the win at the foul line, scoring their final nine points from the stripe.

The outcome does not count in the Mountain Empire District standings.

Meredith Frost scored a game-high 23 points for the Blue Devils (4-3) and Taylor Cannaday hit three 3-pointers and finished with 10 points. Sydney Lindsey and Paige Hanks scored 10 points apiece for the Maroon Tide (3-3).

Grayson County advanced to face Forbush, N.C. in the championship game Saturday.

Magna Vista 52, Carroll County 35: The Warriors pulled away in the fourth quarter and dealt the Cavaliers a nondistrict loss Friday in Ridgeway.

Taisha DeShazo led all scorers with 22 points, including three 3-pointers, for Magna Vista (4-3) while Makayla Hairston scored 14.

Sami Reece scored 10 points to lead Carroll County (6-2), which trailed 32-25 entering the fourth quarter.

East Surry, N.C. 46, Galax 44: The Maroon Tide trailed by 14 points entering the fourth quarter and came up short in its comeback attempt Friday, falling to the Cardinals in the Alleghany Holiday Classic in Sparta.

Caleb Pack led Galax with 14 points while Scott Meredith paced East Surry with 16.

Galax 56, South Stokes, N.C. 46: Cliff Conley hit 9-of-10 from the foul line in fourth quarter and finished with 23 points as the Maroon Tide held off the Sauras at the Alleghany Holiday Classic Thursday in Sparta.

Conley also drained four  3-pointers for Galax. Chandler Quesenberry chipped in with 13 points.

South Stokes (5-7) was led by Bryson Misenheimer with 15 points. Jacquan Martin scored 12 and Devin Feimster added 10.
